Clara Wilson, PA-C

The 2023 Elevate-Derm conference opened with excellent speakers, networking and food - all in the backdrop of beautiful Palm Springs! Matthew Brunner, PA-C welcomed the attendees to the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort for the Elevate Derm PA-NP Conference.

The National Psoriasis Foundation Prep Course kicked off Wednesday morning for those seeking advanced psoriasis knowledge. Veronica Richardson, NP, Victoria Garcia-Albea, NP, Douglas DiRuggiero, PA-C and Eileen Cheever, PA-C led a panel discussion to over 50 attendees.

Dr. April Armstrong started Wednesday afternoon with an engaging lecture on the role of complementary and alternative medicine in the management of atopic dermatitis. Vitamins, minerals, oils and fatty acids were discussed, as well as the use of traditional Chinese medicine. The one and only Dr. Ted Rosen joined Dr. Armstrong on stage next with a captivating talk on tough clinical cases and medical mysteries. Key takeaways were to make a comprehensive list of differentials, utilize the process of elimination, and don’t hesitate to biopsy before starting treatment!

Next, Dr. Armstrong reviewed the less common comorbidities in psoriasis, like uveitis. She also discussed the impact of genital psoriasis on sexual health, and how to manage the mental health implications of psoriasis.

Victoria Garcia-Albea, NP provided a comprehensive review of Hansen’s disease (leprosy). This is still being diagnosed annually in the US but is more endemic in Brazil, India, and Indonesia. Diagnostic techniques and treatments were reviewed but a strong recommendation for referral to a Leprosy center was emphasized. Dr. Rosen joined the panel to discuss the latest statistics on syphilis. It continues to spread at alarming rates, with the highest incidence currently in Las Vegas. It can resemble psoriasis, pityriasis rosea, and even alopecia areata, so it is important to consider in the 15-24 year old age group.

Lastly, Dr. Rosen recognized important trends and patterns in dermatologic clinical research. The specific examples of new products coming to market this year were particularly useful. His discussion on the need for more research on receiving vaccines while on biologic therapy was great food for thought. We left prepared to analyze data and ask the important questions just as the poster session began. Overall, the first day lectures were packed with valuable takeaways!

At the end of the afternoon sessions, the Elevate-Derm Advisory Board presented Dr. Ted Rosen with the 2nd Annual Stead-Silver-Ford Award honoring his dedication to education in the field of dermatology.

The day closed with attendees mingling with colleagues and exhibitors at the evening arrival event.
