Juggling Dermatology & Diapers: Time Management for the PA Mom

Lights, lasers, lotions, and... Legos? Welcome to the dynamic world of a Dermatology Physician Assistant, who's not just navigating the intricacies of skincare, but also the playful challenges of motherhood. For those superhero PA moms who wear white coats by day and wonder woman capes by bedtime story hour, managing time efficiently can seem as elusive as finding that one missing puzzle piece. But fear not! With a blend of humor, determination, and a sprinkle of strategic planning, you can master the art of time management.

First things first, embrace the power of routine. Kids thrive on it, and so does your skincare regimen! Consistency is key. By setting specific days for specific tasks, both at the clinic and home, you can create a predictable flow to your week. Whether it's ‘Melanoma Check Monday’ or 'Taco Tuesday,’ having themed days can add an element of fun while keeping you on track. Remember, the same way retinol takes time to show results, your routine will need a few tweaks and adjustments before it fits just right.

Secondly, cut yourself some slack! Perfection is a myth. Some days your toddler might end up with sunscreen instead of diaper rash cream (kidding!). By approaching every day with a dash of humor, a spoonful of inspiration, and a professional mindset, you'll find that, like the best skincare routines, balance is everything.

Lastly, I would like to give you my best three tips for making it through the week as both a rockstar physician assistant AND a mama:

  1. Choose volunteer opportunities that include your children. I like to think of this as killing two birds with one stone. Help the community, while also teaching your children to do the same. I am the community outreach chair for my children’s school and I involve my kids in every aspect of all community outreach activities. For example, this week we are collecting food for a free-food grocery store in our community. My kids are helping collect the food during carpool and will help me deliver it to those in need.
  2. Make meals easy so you can enjoy eating them with your family. Meal planning does not have to be complicated. I am the queen of the crock pot or sheet-pan meals (recipes to come in my next blog post!)
  3. Be present when you are with your kids! We are all guilty of this, but implementing ‘cell phone free hours’ is extremely helpful to making every second count when you are home with your little ones. Always remember that your kids will cherish the core memories of swimming with you in the pool and could care less about how you look in your bathing suit.

To all the PA moms out there, know that your unique journey adds a special touch to your profession, making you an inspiration to many!
