Overcoming the "Conference Panic": A Newer APP’s Guide to Navigating Dermatology Events (Without the Anxiety)

Written by Georgia Epp-Worth, MPAS, PA-C | May 24, 2026

We’ve all seen the forum threads and social media posts. A newer clinician hops online and essentially asks for a "How to Attend a PA Conference for Dummies" guide. The underlying message is almost always the same: “I want to go, but my imposter syndrome and social anxiety are hitting hard. Is in-person networking actually worth it, or should I just stay at home and grind out solo CME?”

If you are a newer Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, or transitioning into dermatology from another specialty, those feelings are incredibly common. Walking into a massive convention center filled with hundreds of experienced peers can feel intimidating.

But here is the truth: you don’t have to choose between high-quality dermatology APP continuing education and your peace of mind. You just need to find the right environment.

The Dilemma: Staying at Home vs. In-Person Networking

When social anxiety kicks in, opting for virtual modules or choosing to stay at home feels like the safest bet. While that might check the box for your dermatology CME conferences, it causes you to miss out on the most valuable part of your professional development: building a community.

Clinical knowledge gets you through the day, but professional relationships get you through your career. In-person conferences are where you meet future mentors, connect with medical directors, learn about dermatology training opportunities, and find peers who understand the unique pressures of being a newer APP.

The secret isn’t to avoid networking—it’s to choose conferences designed to make networking feel natural, not forced.

Ditching the Megaconference for Welcoming, Specialty-Focused Events

If large, impersonal megaconferences fuel your imposter syndrome, the solution is to pivot toward community-focused events. This is exactly why the Elevate-Derm Alliance hosts three strategically timed, specialized conferences throughout the year: our Spring RAPIDS (Immunology) conference, Elevate-Derm Summer in July, and Elevate-Derm Fall in November.

Instead of feeling like a face in a sea of thousands, Elevate-Derm creates an approachable ecosystem specifically tailored for dermatology PAs and NPs.

Here is how you can successfully navigate these events, even if you are battling social anxiety:

  • Focus on Small-Group Spaces: Skip the pressure of the main floor and spend time in the exhibit halls or at dedicated coffee breaks. The Elevate-Derm layout is intentionally structured to spark casual, low-stakes conversations.
  • Let the Science Do the Talking: Use the lectures as an icebreaker. Asking a peer, “What did you think of that new data on JAK inhibitors?” is an easy, stress-free way to start a conversation without having to make small talk.
  • Look for Fellow Newer APPs: You are never the only one feeling out of place. Keep an eye out for other PAs and NPs checking their schedules solo—chances are, they’ll be incredibly relieved if you say hello.

Your Next Step in Finding Dermatology Conferences

If you’ve been actively finding dermatology conferences but choosing to stay at home out of fear of not fitting in, consider this your invitation.

At the Elevate-Derm Alliance, we host professional networking events in dermatology that also cultivate a welcoming home for the entire APP community. Whether you want to master complex immunodermatology at RAPIDS or grab clinical pearls at our Summer and Fall events, you will find an inclusive space designed to build your confidence, boost your clinical skills, and quiet that inner imposter syndrome.

Don't stay at home this year. Explore our upcoming 2026 conference lineup and experience how different a specialty-focused event can feel.
