Nail Dermoscopy

Nail Dermoscopy by Joslyn Kirby MD

  • Acral melanoma risk factors include: age peak in 40s-60s, brown-to-black bands that are 3+ mm in width, extension or "curling around" to surrounding skin.
  • Hutchinson's sign is a sign of invasion within the nail unit. This is a visual sign that pigment producing cells have migrated from the nail matrix to the cuticle, proximal or lateral nail fold.
  • The triangle sign can be seen in rapidly growing melanomas. Lines within the band are not parallel and the diameter of the band is wider at the proximal end.
