Conference Reporters:

Day 2 of the 2023 Elevate-Derm conference started with a beautiful sunrise and a rejuvenating morning yoga class.

Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd delivered two great morning lectures. First, a literature review of dermatologic diseases in skin of color, where she highlighted the effects of blue light, alternatives to hydroquinone, new research on CCCA and much more. Secondly,

she discussed the evaluation and management of new-onset dyschromias. Working in one of the highest UV index cities in the US, Miami, FL, Dr. Woolery-Lloyd has mastered numerous techniques for treating stubborn pigmentation, namely by utilizing microneedling, topical and oral tranexamic acid, various hydroquinone compounds, and the latest skin brightening alternatives.

Next, oral surgeon and pathologist, Dr. Bryan Trump, presented a fantastic lecture on oral squamous cell carcinoma, salivary gland neoplasms, and Sjogren’s syndrome. As dermatology NPs and PAs, it’s always helpful to hear from other specialties with whom we collaborate. Some topics discussed were lichen planus, mucoceles, leukoplakia, and erythroplakia. Key takeaways were to biopsy leukoplakia that doesn’t wipe off and any oral ulcers that don’t heal within two weeks. When in doubt, do the biopsy or get them into the hands of someone who can.

Next, discussing “All Things Atopic,” husband and wife duo Dr. Brett King and Dr. Brittany Craiglow took the stage. They presented a digestible overview of the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis before shining light on some new topical and oral JAK inhibitors coming to market. Dr. Craiglow answered common questions, such as when to refer an atopic child for food testing.

Dr. Trump returned to discuss common head and neck pathology. He touched on everything from traumatic ulcerative granulomas to aphthous ulcers and squamous papillomas. His therapeutic advice for patients with oral neoplasms was highly beneficial, even showing a personal video on how to perform an oral incisional biopsy!

Dr. Jennifer Soung made her debut discussing pearls in dermatology and rheumatology collaboration. She reviewed the cardinal findings of cutaneous lupus and other autoimmune conditions that may or may not have a positive ANA. Dr. Soung also gave an excellent presentation on her approach to psoriatic arthritis and the treatment of location-specific psoriasis. She provided tools to efficiently diagnose psoriatic arthritis in a dermatology office and offered several clinical pearls on treating scalp, genital, nail, and palmoplantar psoriasis.

Lastly, Dr. King presented a fantastic overview of everything providers need to know about JAK inhibitor safety. Attendees gained a full understanding of the data leading to the black box warning, how to best counsel patients, and who the ideal candidates are for these medications.

We wrapped up the night with the pool-side “Desert Mirage Oasis” welcome event. Cocktails and appetizers in this beautiful setting were a great way to close the day with friendly conversation and networking.
