The Elevate Derm Leadership Retreat 2024: Nurturing the “Why” Behind Elevate Derm
Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Sundance, Utah Elevate Derm hosted a weekend leadership Retreat in January 2024 for its visionary leadership team. Set against the backdrops of towering pines and crisp mountain air, the retreat aimed to foster collaboration, strategic planning, and innovation within dermatology APP education. Two days of intensive discussions and collaborative activities were dedicated to nurture the profound “why” behind Elevate Derm. Let’s delve into the highlights of this insightful agenda:
· The retreat began with an opening session lead by Conference Lead, Matthew Brunner PA-C. Against the canvas of his own life and Elevate Derm’s purpose, he prompted a reflection on the legacy we aspire to leave, the impact on others, and the contribution to the greater good. Subsequently, each leader was challenged to articulate and compose their individual “why.”
· Keri Holyoak PA-C lead the get-to-know-you activity to new heights challenging each leader to conquer their fears. Creating a sense of shared vulnerability, she created a memorable experience for the team to share laughs through a Fear Factory adventure. The escapade concluded with a cricket-eating feast, showcasing the unstoppable spirit of leaders Douglas DiRuggiero and Justin Love.
· Guiding the team through a SWOT analysis, Eileen Cheever PA-C identified Elevate’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, laying the foundation for strategic planning.
· Douglas DiRuggiero PA-C led a large group strategic visioning activity, encouraging leaders to think beyond the immediate future and envision Elevate Derm’s long-term trajectory. Discussions revolved around what Elevate needs to “continue,” “start,” and “stop.”
· The team divided into content development, online content, and innovation workgroups, formulating the 2024 strategic plan for their respective areas. Emphasizing collaboration and cross-committee support, they aimed to achieve common objectives.
· Veronica Richardson NP engaged the team in a reflective leadership workshop featuring a lighted wand radiating an ethereal glow. This wand, pulsated with energy, sparked thought-provoking discussions, aiming to create a unified vision guiding Elevate toward meeting the needs of all derm APPs.
· Collaborating with industry partners committed to the dermatology APP community, the team learned about their credo and commitment to innovation. Michelle Gough led a hands-on-team-building activity that inspired one team to leverage their “box” to think beyond conventional boundaries.
