My Passion

Matthew Brunner, MHS, PA-C, DFAAPA

My Passion: Any of my colleagues who know me know that for the past 15 years of my life, not only have I practiced as a dermatology PA, but I have devoted a good bit of my energy and time to educational conferences for dermatology PAs & NPs. I’m driven by the belief that every learning opportunity that teaches APPs how to be better clinicians, care providers, and members of their communities changes the lives of patients and proves wrong all those who have told me that APPs have little to no training in dermatology and shouldn’t be providing care to patients since they are not qualified.

My Story: Passion is a driving force that fuels our commitment to making a difference in our chosen fields. In the medical profession, this passion translates to a deep desire to improve patient care, enhance clinical expertise, and contribute to the overall well-being of our communities. As an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) with a specialization in dermatology, I have encountered skepticism regarding the abilities and training of APPs in this field. However, my unwavering passion for learning and growth has solidified my belief that every opportunity to enhance our skills transforms our ability to positively impact patients' lives.

Dispelling Misconceptions: It is not uncommon for misconceptions to arise when it comes to the training and capabilities of APPs within the field of dermatology. Overcoming these inaccuracies is essential to showcase the many successes achieved by dedicated APPs. Contrary to popular belief, APPs do receive extensive training in dermatology during their formal education and clinical rotations, allowing them to provide care confidently and effectively to patients. This training is often supplemented by on-the-job training with Board Certified/Board Eligible Dermatologists, self-study in texts and virtual learning opportunities, and accredited dermatology education congresses.

Transformative Learning Opportunities: APPs, like any healthcare professionals, understand the significance of continuous learning and development. With the landscape of medicine constantly evolving, embracing ongoing education is paramount to remain at the forefront of patient care. Learning opportunities like conferences, workshops, and specialized training programs play a significant role in the growth and advancement of APPs in dermatology.

Empowering APPs to be Better Care Providers: By actively investing in education, APPs motivated by their intrinsic passion for patient care can expand their repertoire of skills, knowledge, and expertise in dermatology. This commitment to lifelong learning equips APPs with the tools required to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care to their patients, fostering positive outcomes. Additionally, these educational pursuits enable APPs to develop a holistic approach to patient management, considering not only the dermatological concerns but also considering psychosocial and environmental factors impacting overall well-being.

Benefits of APPs in Dermatology: The inclusion of APPs in dermatology has proven to be instrumental in addressing the increasing demand for specialized care. Their ability to diagnose, treat, and manage both common and complex dermatological conditions has proven invaluable in bridging gaps in healthcare access. Furthermore, APPs often play a pivotal role in patient education, offering valuable insights on prevention and promoting healthy skin practices within their communities.

Changing Lives - One Patient at a Time: Through my journey as an APP in dermatology, I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact and life-changing experiences that skilled and passionate APPs can have on patients. By providing quality care, promoting early intervention, and empowering patients to make informed decisions about their skin health, APPs improve patients' overall well-being and enhance their quality of life.

A passion for patients and their health is the driving force that propels APPs to go above and beyond in their pursuit of excellence in dermatological care. Despite the skepticism surrounding APPs' training in this field, continued learning opportunities and their unwavering dedication allow them to defy these misconceptions and emerge as valuable contributors to the healthcare landscape. With each patient encounter, APPs strive to dispel doubts, advocate for their profession, and ultimately make a positive impact on the lives of those they serve.
