Passion Project - Veronica Richardson

My Passion

Veronica Richardson, ANP-BC, DCNP

"I know I can take excellent care of my patients in any setting (private practice, academia, etc.), but I choose to stay in academia so that I can continue to be at the forefront of evidence-based medicine and be able to teach my colleagues and share the knowledge that I gain. I have a passion for education because it fulfills the idea of "teach a man to fish…" Giving others knowledge strengthens our profession as a whole. Through mentorship and education, I feel I can reach an exponentially greater number of people. I, too, want to show the dermatology world that we APPs not only belong in this specialty but make it better. We must be our own advocates in taking our profession forward."

As a healthcare provider, I am incredibly fortunate to impact my patients' lives in a positive way daily. It is a unique gift and one that I do not take lightly. It is something I reflect on during my daily walk to and from the office. I often think of this quote when I reflect on my career as a nurse and nurse practitioner:

When I think about all the patients and their loved ones I have worked with over the years, I know most of them don't remember me, nor do I them. But I do know that I gave a little piece of myself to each of them, and they to me, and those threads make up the beautiful tapestry in my mind that is my career in nursing. –Donna Wilk Cardillo

No matter my setting, I have the honor and privilege to help patients at some of their most vulnerable times. My compassion, combined with my knowledge and skill, allows me to take the absolute best care of patients while seeing them through their challenging, complex, and often chronic skin diseases. Being in an academic setting and immersed in education constantly challenges me to continue to evolve as a clinician, strive for excellence, and step into the role of mentor and educator. Sharing my growing body of knowledge and expertise with others undoubtedly makes both them and me better! Through this, I know that I not only have a positive impact on the patients I see in my clinic but also on the patients of those whom I have helped to teach.
