Commonly Missed Diagnoses in Pediatric Dermatology

Commonly Missed Diagnoses in Pediatric Dermatology by James Treat MD

  • Midline congenital scalp and nasal lesions in kids should not be biopsied until you know it is not a cutaneous manifestation of neurologic tissue.
  • Capillary Malformation-Arteriovenous Malformation Syndrome, caused by RASA-1 or Ephrin B-4 mutation, look like red-purple café au laits. Early screening can be life saving, catching possible internal AVMs.
  • In children with contact dermatitis, be aware of isothiazolinone allergy, a common chemical in homemade slime, glue and even hypoallergenic detergents.
