- Punch biopsy down to subcutanous fat is ideal for diagnosis of panniculitis, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, medium vessel vasculitis, and calciphylaxis.
- Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) is valuable in differentiating bullous disorders. DIF will always be negative in Hailey-Hailey Disease, but is positive in pemphigus disorders.
- If Henoch-Schönlein purpura is suspected, DIF should be performed to assess for perivascular deposition of IgA.
