A closer look at Lindsay Wilson, MD: a champion for women’s health in dermatology
Lindsay Wilson, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, chose to go into medicine at age ten after watching the birth of her sister. She was fascinated with the idea of helping families grow and become more complete. After attending the University of Massachusetts, she returned home to Salt Lake City, Utah for medical school and dermatology residency at the University of Utah. She is now a champion for women’s health in dermatology.
Dr. Wilson commented, “I really like working with women and found it to be a
vulnerable population. I learned if you can be there to listen and help them, it could be very satisfying.” Dr. Wilson further stated, “Complex medical dermatology oftentimes affects the vulva. Clinicians are often not asking the right questions to get people better care. It affects the full life, including intimacy. I enjoy asking those questions to help change their life for the better.” She also speaks and collaborates with the International
Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease, a group of dermatologists, gynecologists, pelvic floor physical therapies, and sex therapists who have dedicated their studies to improve quality of care for patients who present with a vulvovaginal disorder.
Dr. Wilson will be speaking at Elevate Derm in Tucson this November to widen the lens and advance the health and well-being of the total woman through the dermatology encounter. She commented, “There is more than just topical steroids in treating vulvar diseases. You can get to the right diagnoses by asking the right questions.”
She will also focus on history and exam, including an algorithm to help with the diagnosis. She will also focus on different vulvar biopsy techniques. Dr. Wilson elaborated, “Everyone often does a punch biopsy and I don’t think that is always the best approach
in the vulva, especially since the pathology is superficial. Stitches are uncomfortable. If you have to do a punch, there are ways to avoid it using some biopsy hacks to help. In my lecture I will also teach you how to pick the right technique and location.”
Her presentation will include other hot topics in women’s health: what we need to know about transgender health, alopecia, acne, HPV vaccinations, and HS. She will also lecture on how to approach and treat generalized vulvar itch.
Join Dr. Lindsey Wilson in Tucson this upcoming November for lectures that will improve women’s health in dermatology.
