Being a Mom, Wife, and Dermatology PA: Traveling with Kids

Last month we traveled to New Zealand as a family with our three children ages 11, 9 and 6. We explored glowworm caves, hiked over suspension bridges to glaciers, savored fergburger in Queenstown, and survived Cyclone Gabrielle.

Traveling with kids can be a thrilling and memorable. While it does require patience and extra planning, the excitement and joy that come from exploring new places with our little ones have been priceless. Let me share a few tips and insights we learned along the way that will make your family adventure even more enjoyable.

Involve the Kiddos in the planning process: Traveling with kids opens up a world of discovery and wonder. Embrace their curiosity and eagerness to explore by including them in the trip planning process. Discuss the upcoming adventure, show them pictures of the destination, and let them help choose activities or attractions to visit. By involving them, you’re nurturing their sense of responsibility and making them feel invested in the trip.

Plan, plan, plan: While spontaneity can be fun, traveling with kids requires a bit of pre-planning. Research child-friendly attractions, accommodations, and dining options in advance. Make a rough itinerary, but also be flexible and open to unexpected changes or detours in the plan. Remember, the journey is just as memorable as the destination.

Capture the memories: Documenting your family’s trips is a great way to preserve the precious moments. Encourage your kids to keep travel journals, take photos and create scrapbooks when you return home. These mementos will become invaluable keepsakes that they can look back on with joy.

Enjoy the journey and embrace a child’s spirit of adventure: Remember that traveling with kids is not solely about reaching the destination. It’s about the journey itself. Embrace the unexpected, find joy in the little things, and savor the special moments shared as a family. These are the memories that will stay with you and your family for a lifetime.

Traveling with kids can be filled with laughter and bonding. Embrace the adventure, plan wisely, and create memories that will be cherished by your family for years to come. Happy travels!
